filmscanners: constant warmup on flatbed scanner

my epson 1200U is experiencing a very strange problem lately. every time i
do a scan it's taking 10-20 second warming up the lamp. normally, it does
this once a session or every few hours. but now, every scan, including the
preview causes the warmup to happen.

i looked through option/preferences and didn't find anything that would
cause that so i'm worried that maybe it's some sort of problem with the
lamp. it's never reaching the correct white levels and the "warmup" is
actually a timeout of some sort.

anyone else experience anything of this sort?
