Boy, I wish that were true of my operating system. I have never been
able to do this with Windows 2000. I have to reboot every time. I should
qualify that. In order for the system to know the SS4000 is there, it
has to be on when I boot. As long as I don't reboot, I can turn the
scanner on and off and the software still knows it's there. But if I
have to reboot and I forget to turn on the SS4000, the software can't
see it. I don't see any freezes. The software just can't see it.

Now I've recently had to rebuild my entire system because my boot drive
froze up. In the process, I went to XP. I haven't actually tested its
behavior under XP.
