I use XP, but used win2k beforehand, and Ive always
had the the following experience with my Canon FS2710.
You can have the machine running fine, then connect
the scanner ... nothing. But if you go to the device
list and do 'scan for hardware changes' (right click),
then it will pause for a second, and then identify the
scanner ... no problem.

You can get the device list by right clicking on
the 'My Computer' icon and then choosing 'Manage',
and then click on the 'Device Manager'. Then
right click on the computer icon and it will do
the scan.
