I'd give the firewire card a try.

Before I start messing with Firewire cards, the drivers of which might or
might not be available in XP, as no drivers came with the card supplied with
the SS4000plus, does anyone out there know if there is any reason to think
that it (SS4000 Plus) might work with a firewire card and not USB under an XP
OS.  In USB the deviced is recognized in the device manager it is just that
it says that it is not configured correctly (gives a code 1 whatever that
means) and there are no drivers.
