[filmscanners] Re: Silverfast vs. Vuescan

Overly complicated, finicky, etc is a matter of opinion - we all have our
biases. I find your description to be "word perfect" for many scanner
drivers but I didn't (until now) write it in the forum. It would not be the
first time that I've thrown my arms in the air in total frustration at
Vuescan, NikonScan, Insight, CanoScan, LinoColor and host of others. To be
frank the current, well it was yesterday, implementation of Vuescan does my
head in, but I acknowledge and accept that many think it is good.

"I" use SilverFast because it suites my workflow and ensures that I have a
common interface for all my scanning needs. In an ideal world the same could
be written of Vuescan, but alas it does NOT fit with my workflow and "I" do
NOT find it to accurately reflect the true range my chromes - so "I" choose
to use SilverFast.

This statement is UNTRUE. LaserSoft like many companies charge for full
upgrades 4 to 5, 5 to 6 and 6 to 7, etc. Version 5.5 was the FIRST dot
release where they charged an upgrade cost (Adobe did the same with the same
griping with Photoshop 5.5). Version 5.5 introduced a completely new feature
in the form of NegaFix. I am not justifying the update charge, simply
providing you with their reasoning and demonstrating that they are not
alone. I seem to recall a week or so back a few folk on this list querying
Ed Hamricks business model for Vuescan - he was happy as it is, and since
LaserSoft have chosen to continue with their business model I think they
must also be happy.

> Let the flames begin.

I don't think "flames" are justified. Nevertheless I do take issue with
your erroneous remark regarding upgrade costs which seems to have gathered a
momentum of its own on this list. Furthermore, I would bet the next release
of Photoshop that had you wrote the same less than positive remarks about
VueScan the world and its grandmother would be screaming foul! Many list
members who use SilverFast have contacted me privately for advice, etc over
the period that I have been a member. For their own reasons they stay
silent. If some of you think that SilverFast is a dog then you can be
assured there are many who think Vuescan, et al bark just as loud. Bottom
line here is: we all have our opinions and the perfect scanner software
hasn't been written yet.
