Do you have any suggestions for improving VueScan?  I'm always

I worked very hard to get VueScan well calibrated on the SS4000
(I think this is what you're using).  It's possible that the problem
you're having with VueScan is the auto white balance algorithm.  You
can turn this off by setting "Device|Color balance" to "Neutral".

Both the LaserSoft and VueScan business models have advantages
and disadvantages.

I agree completely.  SilverFast is a nice product, and the engineers
at LaserSoft are quite good.
