All the Minolta scanners do the focusing in the host software.  The
host software (i.e. VueScan) repeatedly reads a scan line, changing
the focus position after reading each scan line (without moving
the scan head).  VueScan then picks the focus position where the
contrast is a maximum (the sum of the absolute values of the
differences between adjacent pixels).
