Thanks for your efforts in putting up those samples Tom - it does appear that 
you get less noise using this method.

But it also looks like the extra exposure has blown the highlights pretty 
badly, so 2 merged exposures would be required.  Unless Vuescan's abilities can 
do it all in one..?
