Well this is not really Epsons fault - just look at the prices - the 1200 and 1640 Perfection are cheap consumer machines compared to hi quality machines: look what the Linotype scanners cost, or the dedicated Medium format Film scanners - 1500 $ - 3500 $. The 1200 perfection (I have it too) are something like 250 $ - they are fine for flatbed stuff - they are even good at it. Transparency is another thing....
 
I am curious what the 2450 will be like, but my hopes aren´t too high. BTW, the Epson "Expression" line of scanners is already at a higher quality - and price - level...
