I'm sorry Ramesh, There was a typo there... too many acronyms!

It was supposed to read DMA, not DMS.

Yes, it is usually in the device manager/disk drives. double click on
the hard drive and a menu will come up. One tab will read "Settings"
and in the middle will be "options". if DMA is unchecked, check and
reboot, or vice versa.

I am using Win 95, so it might be somewhat different on other OSs.

If this makes no difference, keep DMA checked. Usually the problem is
it is unchecked, and should be checked, BTW.

I had the exact problem with my Hp S-20, BTW, and this did fix it.
However, some installation program (I think it was for my CD burner)
kept turning it off during software installs and upgrades, and then not
returning it to checked.

This zig-zagging as you call it, is almost definitely a bottleneck in
transfer from the scanner.

Do you have a lot of other items running off the USB port? What IDE/USB
chip set are you using on your mainboard? There have been some problems
with USB and the Via Chip sets (which I also use).

Oh, this is easy. Along the edge of the film are frame numbers and other
information. When you can read this correctly (not mirror imaged) you
are looking through the NON-emulsion side. The other side is the
emulsion side.

Also, the emulsion side usually has a slight bit of texture on the
image, it is sticker if you dampen your finger and place it one it (use
a piece of scrap film for this), and usually is slightly less shiny.
Also in most cases, the film will tend to curl with the inner side of
the curl being the emulsion side.

Best of luck, let me know how things turn out for you.
