[filmscanners] Re: SS4000 & SCSI under Vista

Vuescan compatibility list (750 scanners) is at
http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#supported

Most do not require OEM software installed. No Minoltas, Nikons or
Polaroids do, nor Microtek Artixscans. Nor Epsons.

Also 'On Mac OS X, VueScan works with most USB to SCSI converters,
including the Adaptec USBXchange and USB2Xchange. VueScan also works with
most Firewire to SCSI converters. You don't need to install any vendor
software to get this to work. Only one SCSI device per converter is
supported, and you should use SCSI ID 0.'

Lots more Mac OSX installation notes down the same page

As far as Windows is concerned

'There's a bug in Microsoft's scsiscan.sys driver when using Firewire or
SCSI scanners on 64-bit Windows. Microsoft has produced a hotfix that you
can request from them, and it will solve the problem. Microsoft says it
isn't for Vista x64, but people have reported that it works fine on Vista
x64 also. There are more details at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922498/'

'[named scanners excepted]... if you're using Windows Vista, XP or x64 and
you don't want to install the software from the manufacturer, you can use
the driver in c:\vuescan (scanners.inf). This driver will work with most
scanners.'

(For historical reasons that are too complicated to go into, there is a
bugfix copy of scanners.inf on my site c/o Ed at
http://tonysleep.co.uk/files. It probably isn't the latest version though,
and the current version of VS is a safer bet).

(still on XP and no intention of moving:)
