I have exactly the same problem - only on windows 98 - I get a slightly
different error message but to much the same effect. In my case, it
went wrong after installing software to connect a Sony digital camera,
but I had forgotten that I'd done that (the camera was a friends and
only installed for a little while). At least that gives me something
else to look at in my attempts to fix it. It's been driving me faintly
nuts!

Sam.
