Thanks Tim - yeah I was thinking it could be a memeory problem, except
that the problem remained if I cold-rebooted tp purge memory.  Ed
updates Vuescan so often that I usually install a new version whenever
it happens!  Just installed 7.5.41, and have been scanning all night
with no problem so far - farther than I usually get so I'm hoepful.
