I have seen very good Epson-printed results from a Microtek 8700, from 5x4.
This is about 600GBP incl transparency hood.

I don't know, but I suspect we are unlikely to see substantially improved
scanners now. Unlike the previous 3-4 generations, I suspect we have now
reached a point of diminishing returns, financially if not technically. It
has become a mature market and film use is likely to only decline from now,
so no scanner mfr. is going to throw money at R&D/innovation. Change will
probably focus on usability and price, and marketing.
