[filmscanners] Acer Scanwit 2720S color depth

My Scanwit 2720S is rated a 12 bit per channel device (12x3=36bit) right?
The software that comes with Miraphoto has three options for color
1. High speed (I don't know what that represents)
2. 24 bit color
3. 48 bit color

Photoshop and Vuescan can have only 8 bit or 16 bit colors as well

I'm confused, and don't understand why the software provides just 24 and 48
bit if the scanner is 12 bit (36 bit total)
Do I get any advantage scanning in 16 bit per channel) 48 bit, or I should
simply use (8 bit per channel) 24 bit?

Thanks,

Titus
