I think that the software interpolation is the
extraction of data from a scanner that is (supposedly)
greater than the optical resolution. If the stepper
motor moves in finer steps than the optical
resolution, assuming a square wave input, you should
get a bell shaped curve of data. From this you can
extract usable data (interpolate).
