All Nikon scanners use coloured (R,G and B) LED's strobed sequentially, 
and capture the monochrome CCD's response to each in turn. Other scanners 
either use a continuous white lightsource and the filters are part of each 
CCD element, or a filter wheel is placed in front of the lightsource and 3 
passes made - this latter type uses a monochrome CCD too.
