I also had a firewire card go bad that was preventing W2K from
rebooting. It got stuck on the splash screen. I found it by
systematically removing one PCI card at a time until it booted.
Unfortunately intermittent problems are more difficult. Before the
firewire card stopped working altogether and started hanging the OS
boot, my firewire devices would periodically go offline or not perform
up to spec. Should have suspected the card, but didn't. So some card
could be flakey.
