I'm sorry to say I haven't seen this error before. This sense code
doesn't appear in Nikon's low-level documentation, the nearest one
that I can find is "internal mechanical error, cause unknown".

I had a very similar error on mine when it was delivered (also
second-hand). I could run Nikon Scan (2.5) and scan mounted slides,
however. The problem was that the lens had slipped out of its place
and therefore calibration of the CCD failed.

Windows doesn't know anything about the scanner apart from the fact
that it's a SCSI device that exists. "Test" doesn't work for the same
reason. What you installed seems to be absolutely correct.

Have you tried VueScan? It might at least give you more verbose error
messages.

Also, if you don't mind running Linux, you can try SANE. It can give
you all information you receive from the scanner, for example you know
exactly at what stage the SCSI error is received.
