Is this the exact same tranny, the exact same software with the same
settings? With/without Nikon colour manglement engaged?

I only ask because it's quite possible to reveal this sort of horrid mess
with practically any CCD scanner if you try too hard to extract all the
shadow information. Normally, a sensible black point just amputates it, but
messing with curves especially, to try and increase shadow separation, will
exaggerate all the non-linearities.

If you've upgraded Nikonscan, that may be a factor.

Vuescan (if you use that) generally pushes the envelope a bit and you get
more shadow detail at the cost of more exquisitely rendered grunge.

If you can get rid of the horribleness by clipping the black point a
little, without sacrificing much shadow detail, do so:)
