Ah, the danger of analogies is that we end up arguing over them rather than
 the core issue. I should have known better than to risk it...

There's nothing complete about tranny tonality, nor incomplete about neg
tonality, in any absolute sense. It's merely a matter of 'best fit' to the
luminance range of the original scene that you *want* to capture on film.
