I'm not sure how it helped, but when I looked at the scans at 800%+
enlargement, the pepper grain was less evident as the transition between the
adjacent pixels and the pepper grain pixels was smoother.  It was not so
much a case of one tone immediately going to the dark colour of the pepper
grain, more a smoother transition.

Don't know how it helped but It just seemed less evident in the image.
