[filmscanners] Re: OT: Choosing a high End CRT

>> My experience from using high end LCDs, as well as notebooks with high
end
active matrix LCDs, is they to not provide near as "good" a display (color
wise) as CRTs do for digital imaging.

Though LCDs may look nice for regular Windows type displays, I would
STRONGLY urge anyone who is looking at using an LCD for digital imaging,
that they try it first, and compare it next to a good CRT. <<

That's exactly what I did, using a dualhead video card (with DVI output for
the LCD). Mitsubishi Diamondtron vs Samsung LCD on the same system and video
card.

Two drawbacks to the LCD. One, the optimum viewing angle is narrow compared
to a CRT, although I understand the latest LCD designs are much better in
this regard. Two, the tonal accuracy of an LCD display is not great out of
the box. It needs to be profiled with a measuring instrument and software
(such as with Optical/LCD Spyder). Even still, the LCD has slightly less
shadow detail than a CRT.

At first, I was planning to use the LCD as a second monitor for Photoshop
menus. As it turned out, the LCD is now the primary display and in the near
future I'm going to replace the Mitsubishi with another LCD. This guy is now
a convert. I don't think I'll every buy another CRT. For me the advantages
of an LCD screen far outweigh any disadvantages.
