[filmscanners] Re: New Adaptec ASPI version 4.70 released - Not for W95

The way to get around the fact that Adaptec's ASPI layer will only install
with an Adaptec card is to install an earlier version of Adaptec's ASPI
layer first. Then the subsequent versions will install OK.ASPI layer 4.60
(1019) will install with other cards, 4.60 (1021) won't.

Microsoft and Adaptec appear to be in a bit of a pissing contest. Microsoft
wants it's new standard SIT to supplant ASPI. The SIT kernel provides
support for SCSI, Firewire, etc. SIT works but does not seem to be as robust
as ASPI.
Although ADAPTEC says it does not support Win 2K, ME, etc in fact it's ASPI
layer will allow you to use these operating systems with SCSI devices and
usually works with most SCSI cards. One rub that does occur is the program
that can be downloaded from Adaptec to install the ASPI layer will not
install unless there is an Adaptec SSCSI card in the computer. That was not
always the case.

Well, the main thing it solves is the confusion over Adaptec SCSI cards and
W2K/XP, which don't have ASPI layer in the OS as does Win9x. So folks
install a SCSI card, W2K/XP sees it and seems to install everything
necessary for it's operation, but at least as regards many (most?) SCSI
scanners, they won't function without ASPI layer.
Then began the real confusion, as Adaptec site warned "don't load it!"
(mainly because they didn't support that), but both MS and Nikon state that
must be loaded, and indeed it does.

So now, there is a version of ASPI for all Windows 'cept 95. And I suppose
it's probably improved even for Win98/ME, although I see no reason to load
it, since my SCSI chain under 98SE functions just fine.
