  You are correct about this being the consensus of advice ... but
understand such advice does not take into account the quality and algoritmic
methods employed by your specific scanner's firmware (or software).  In the
end ... if it works for you, then continue your practice.  From what you
describe, your technique is plausibly benificial (... that is, if you can
afford the expense of filesizes 4x larger ...)
