Here is the reponse to my questions put to Minolta USA yesterday:

Thank you for your question on the Dimage Scan Multi Pro. The scanner
will only work with Windows XP, Windows ME, or Windows 2000. Sorry,
windows 98 is not compatible with the Multi Pro.
The Dimage Scan Multi Pro will work with Windows XP with a IEEE1394
adaptec firewire card added to the system. At this time we have no SCSI
cards compatible with Windows XP.
