I store them in their Jewel Cases, in a cool part of my home. I usually 
do two copies. I suppose if they were totally unreplacable, I'd either 
store one at another location, or buy a fire resistant locked safe/cabinet.

I'd suggest they be checked once a year or two for degrading.  When they 
are stored in the jewel cases, I always make sure the front is blocked 
with some sort of paper/card to make sure they aren't exposed to light.

I suspect the major storage issues are heat, light and dampness.  The 
less of each the better.
