If sendmail can't connect to the destination host then it will hold the
message in the queue anyway. To avoid the initial delivery attempt,
you could define a mailer with the "expensive" flag set and add your
own rules to force the desired domains to use this mailer. The
details are left as an exercise to the reader :-)

Я попробовал - у меня получилось. Попыток отправить не делает,
по ETRN отдает. Если нужно, могу рассказать подробнее.
