[filmscanners] Coolscan V vs. 5000 Opinions?

I've read the brochures and see the specified differences between the
two machines, but I'm wondering if, in the real world, there are any
real differences between the two.

I'm really only interested in image quality. Speed and convenience
(roll holders, slide feeders) are unimportant.

On c|net and Epinions everybody loves all these scanners equally, is
that true for more experienced users.

Has anyone actually done scans on the two machines who can comment?

Here are the differences that I can find:

CS V ED CS 5000 ED

14 bit 16 bit Can you see the difference
4.2D 4.8D I believe this is "computed" not measured
14 sec 11 sec Preview Speed
38 sec 20 sec Scan Speed
               Stack Loader
               Long-roll holder

Other than these things, they spec out pretty much equally, including
DigitalIce4.

To add a little to the fire, after seeing the postings here about the
problems with the Minolta Dimage 5400 feeding the film holder, I'm wary,
but has anyone added this machine to the comparison?

5400 II
16 bit
4.8D Computed (according to KM)
12 sec Preview
25 sec Scan

From the brochure it compares nicely with the 5000 ED for much less
money. Does it deliver?

I am very wary of computed dynamic ranges. Just because you have a 16
bit A-D converter doesn't mean that the scanner has the optical system
and the illumination (and the CCD) required to actually see film that
dense without blacking out. So I'd really like to know your experiences
capturing shadow detail

What's the call for SilverFast AI, a required purchase or is the
software that comes with the scanner sufficient.

Getting ready to make an end-of-year purchase.

Mr. Bill
