[filmscanners] negative conversion

In photography I use different media for different uses. I use digital for
commercial work, slides for landscape and travel photography, b&w film for
my personal/more ambitious project and color negatives for all my family
photos which are very important to me. I use mainly Fuji Reala because I
like the color and tonality it gives. It's absolutely fantastic.
My only concern is "future compatibility of negatives". What I mean is if I
wanted to print as excellent looking print with an inkjet as on traditional
paper I'd have to be able to convert the image to positive so that it look
great. I use NikonScan and VueScan and with this experience I have doubts if
it's possible at all.
Is there any program which really undestands how to interpret negatives? I
don't claim I'm an expert but I spent so much time on learning digital
workflows that I'm at least sure I don't make any obvious mistake. I can get
a neutral print from a negative but I wouldn't say it's as nice as straight
optical print from the same frame.
I'd appreciate your comment on this as I think some of you prefer color
negatives to other films and may have more experience than me.
