I have a 5400 and it copes well with Kodachrome - provided you don't
expect to use the ICE functionality.

I've never had another film scanner, but I have no complaints about the
speed when connected by firewire.  It was slow on an old system with only
USB 1 capability.

I wasn't impressed with the Minolta software but as I already had VueScan
(bought for the flatbed scanner) I use that.
