[filmscanners] RE: Colour management on Negatives

Unless you have more detailed information or knowledge, I would think that
eh first and foremost question is if the prints that you are using as your
proof as to what the correct color is are themselves color correct as
compared to (a) the original source target that was captured on the
negatives and (b) a orioer ciolor correct rendition of the neagtives. If it
is not or you have no external information as to the proper colors, it may
be difficult to judge if the scan has produced a correct color rendering of
the negative or not; or how you should color correct the scan if you feel it
needs color correction.

Just because it is a major Kodak lab does not mean that an accurrate color
corrected product is produced on every occassion. Things can go wrong. I
also believe that most scanners are self calibrating each time they are
turned on; I believe what you might be referring to is a color profile of
thye scanner which includes color lookup tables for different brand film
types and speeds. However such profiles as such do not assure color
correctness just color equivalency across devices.

Subject: [filmscanners] Colour management on Negatives

A friend has a 7 x 5 print of a negative and a further enlargement print
from the negative at 10 x 7. It is from Fuji Superia 200 negative film. Both
from the same major Kodak lab in Glasgow, Scotland.

The smaller picture has a blue cast to it but a coax lead coming down the
wall on both pictures looks black and the plants in front of the house are
both a mixture of greens and yellows.

I scaned the said negative on a Minolta 5400 with no ICE on.

The plants are all green ( virtually no yellow)and the coax cable coming
down the wall has a distinct purple tinge to it.

Therefore how do I get the correct colour scanning negative film ot is it
very much hit and miss.

I believe it is only possible to get an IT 8.7/1 transparency test image to
calibrate a film scanner and that there is no readily avaialble 35mm
standard negative test image that can be used to calibrate a film scanner.
