So, for slides, does the data file describe the actual colour on the
target film? Or does it compensate for each films slightly different
rendition of colour?

I assume the former? So it shouldn't matter what type of (slide) film
the target is, right?

What is the difference between a scanner profile (or target) and a film
profile (or target)?
