Actually, I think there is a resolution penalty--The Olympus E20 can be used 
either
way--with the "physical" leaf shutter or "software" shutter. The physical 
shutter only goes
to 1/640, but gives you full sensor resolution. The "software" shutter gives 
you access to
much higher, still fully synced shutter speeds, but only at half resolution.
