[filmscanners] RE: Epson 1680 vs. 2450/3200

Les,

I have being using the Expression 1680 Pro for 9 months, mainly for
monochrome medium format scanning. The 2450 had just been launched in the UK
when I made the purchase. I read the reviews and managed to get through to a
service engineer at Epson UK for an opinion. He recommended the 1680 pro in
preference to the 2450 :

1. Significantly better Dmax
2. Dual focus mechanism

I have had no regrets. The 1680 is 1600x3200 and the interpolation algorithm
gives excellent 3200x3200 scans. I routinely scan using Vuescan at 3200
monochrome as RGB and then convert to Greyscale from the green channel (
noticeably sharper than the red and blue ). The film holder works well but
will cut off a small portion of a three strip of 6x6cm negatives - the strip
needs to be moved slightly to fully capture the third neg.

The 1680 is built like a tank, weighs a ton and is easily capable of
producing a hernia if not lifted with care !

Subject: [filmscanners] Epson 1680 vs. 2450/3200

Hello!

Any thoughts on the relative quality of these scanners for 2 1/4 and 4x5
film scanning? I know the 1680 is "only" 1600 DPI, but I understand that the
cheaper scanners do not reach their true resolution in effective terms. The
1680 claims 3.6 dmax vs. 3.4 for the other two, but this spec appears
utterly meaningless, since dmin is NOT stated. Price is a significant
factor, but I might spring for the 1680 if it had real advantages.

Have any of our European posters seen/heard anything about the 3200 yet?
Seems to be taking a goodly while to show up over here.

TIA,
Les
