How large is the monitor? I would not be able to exceed 1600x1200 on my 20"
Sony, even if the monitor supported it, simply because the dot pitch on the
screen is too coarse--at 1600x1200, the size of an individual pixel is
approximately the same as a phosphor stripe triad, which is as small as you
can go.

With a dot pitch of 0.26 mm, you need at least a 26" diagonal on your
monitor to be able to use 2048x1536.
