I have a long history with Insight, and I recall it being able to be
launched both as a plugin or not. I can see the obvious benefit of
it being a plugin so you can scan a single image and have it loaded
directly into photoshop without hassling with it on the filesystem or
launching separate apps just to reload it.

But, that was an old version of insight that I used. If it's changed
since then, then I can see why people might be upset that it doesn't
run as a plugin.

That doesn't dismiss the need for the standalone app... all these apps
should do both. And, it turns out, silverfast has one too -- it's just
not installed by default. I gotta go get it off the CD.

HDR?

I used to do raw scans in insight, as well as adjusted scans, and
sometimes insight does a good job. On a few rarer occassions, I found it
did a better job than silverfast. However, I've found silverfast to be
consistently better than insight over the course of processing hundreds
of slides at a time, so I've stuck with that... Again, this is old
versions of Insight and Silverfast. Times may have changed since then.
