[filmscanners] Re: Slightly OT: Hard Drive Speed

Whoever would buy a 9.1GB hard disk for 100$ is making a big MISTAKE ...
then , you are right and I am WRONG .
And hence , being so misleading for the entire group I want to censure
myself (also for having so badly bothered everybody) and I am immediately
returning to my silent reading .

I do apologize for having bored everybody with this silly polemics about
price/performances of hard drives .

anyway ... the list price on the IBM WEB site is :
 Qty. Product Description IBM Web Price*
     07N5620   Ultrastar 36 LZX, 9 GB, 10,000 RPM, 68 pin
    $276.00

enbr=1&cntry=840&lang=en_US&scrfnbr=73&cgrfnbr=2058217&x=7&y=12

so ... if a retailer is selling the same unit for 100$ why couldn't be
another reseller selling them for less ????
Is 64% discount making more sense than 70% or 80% discount off the list
prices ???

You can selectively quote big price lists in both directions.

For instance below are two adjacent entries from pricewatch.com.

In this case the IDE drive is four times the size of the SCSI drive for the
same cost.

Personally I feel that's a more accurate reflection of the market.

 9.1GB SCSI QM309100XC-SCA 7200RPM 80PIN SCA 3.5LP XC009J2 GSA #
GS-35F-0171M
 XC009J2 80-Pin, 9.1GB, 7200rpm, 6.3ms access time, 4MB cache buffer,
$ 100

Quantum
 Ultra DMA/100 eide 40.0GB
 8.5ms 7200rpm 2048K 3 Year Warranty
$ 101
