How right you are Mr Lyons in ALL that you said but! I believe the situation
canalso be sumerised in the following way....

Silverscan is a professional operating system designed with the professional
in mind.
It fits in very well with those individuals or organisations who need the
systematic and detailed facilities that professional scanning people need.

By the way, and just in case there are any with a misguided sense of what a
professional scanning person is then let me add that such an individual my
be working for himself but is also often working for others, and the key
need here is to earn a living directly from the scanning function itself.

There are many on here who use the scanning process simply as a component
part of a much longer and more involved process and are likely to be more
intrested in either archiving or designing or creative print making.

The professional scanning person is almost entirely interested in scannig
and only scanning and for such individuals Silverfast is the business and
from where I stand is likely to remain so.

In professional activities the cost of upgrades is not an issue, what is
much more important is the functional improvements that come with the
upgrade.
If you are earning a living working for yourself ,all these quite trivial
costs can be written up as expenses and therefore come out of income before
tax which means they cost you nothing at all, unless that is you enjoy
handing over more money to the revenue authorities than is absolutly
necessary.

Exactly the same principles apply of course to the capital items, about
which this list is primarly concerned.
If anyone earning a living from the photographic image making process finds
it difficult to finance a capital outlay of 2-3,0000 big ones then one might
have cause to wonder just what sort of an organisation they are involved in
running.

Either HP or leasing will ensure that capital expense ends up as revenue
except where the final accounts are concerned and arrangements can quite
easily be made using the services of a finance house that will ensure the
lease or hp period can be balanced against payment levels in such a way as
to ensure affordability with matching income flows, if they can't then do
not buy and get ready to become uncompetitive.

At the end of the day if you produce a P&L sheet that balances income and
expenditure then you will also end up paying nothing at all for the capital
item simply because it is set off against taxable income.

If on the other hand your are unable to raise the finance for a capital
purchase at the levels of current small scale scanner technology then one
might be forgiven for wondering just why an individual botheres to be self
employed at all and for sure as modern technology continues to develop into
industries in it's unstoppable way, then it must be likely that many
organisation will cease to exist, simply because of their inability ot
afford the necessary equipment.

That's called business by the way and it happens all the time.
