My LS30 has been lying on its side for about a year now.  It works fine.
One possible advantage is that the dust is less likely to settle on the CCD.
Disadvantages - the film strip holder has a habit of making the film
slightly off square due to gravity.The SA-20 and IA-20 work fine.
