I suggest you visit Wayne Fulton's site, A Few Scanning Tips and read the
sections on film scanners and the basics of scanning in general.  Among other
things you will read that the dynamic range reported in specifications is a
number calculated from the number of data bits the manufacturer uses to record a
pixel.  Also if you read carefully, you can see that software such as Photoshop
limits the number of data bits that can be used.
