Yes, I'm clutching at straws. ISTM we need more info. Here are some 
questions, eg:-

- Has anyone tried doing a long thin sectional scan, and a short wide one, 
using the same parameters as give banding on a full frame. Any change?

- Does this happen via Silverfast too?

- Does this happen both on PC & Mac?

- are there any common factors between systems, eg RAM, CPU, type of 
firewire card?
