Thanks, Art.  I'm going to experiment further - fortunately I kept the raw
scan. :) It may have been an aberration with Vuescan.  I unchecked the
"infra-red clean" filter, closed Vuescan, started it again and rechecked the
filter.  Vuescan has behaved since then on other slides in the same film.
