        I am amazed the software didn't simply expose for a brighter
exposure.  The Nikon scanner can be asked to over-expose, but the
"automatic" determination should have done a much better job.  I
haven't yet played with this version of the software, so I have little
to suggest.  But I would begin again with loading the factory default
settings, and try to determine why it is the scanner software is not
measuring the slide's density properly.
