Yes such high quality that there's significant optical bloom in the
LS40/4000. The Minolta lenses in their recent scanners seem much better in
this regard.

To get a full taste of the optical bloom in a Nikon scanner, simply scan a
mounted slide and observe how the mount, where it's adjacent to a thin part
of the slide (e.g. bright overcast sky), is not black.

When I bought the LS40 I'd never seen mention of this problem. Sadly, to
this day, Nikon scanners are not brought to task for this limitation.
Imaging Resource did identify this issue with Nikon scanners when originally
reviewing the Minolta Scan Multi Pro (MF/135mm scanner), I think it was.

It was only identified when comparing the scans with the Minolta's. Sad
aint it? I identified this problem without comparison with any other
scanner. Why can't reviewers?

But anyway, you have the 5400. I'm a bit envious, but in fact my
filmscanning days are over, really.
