I hope not <g>.

>>>I doubt that Mitsui or the CD-R (as a product) will be here. I do not
take these extrapolations seriously. It would be nice to know, what a
reasonable life expectancy of a CD-R is.

In 10 years, there's a good chance we will not be using CD-R's, but a more
dense format. At that time I will copy my important data to the new
format, whatever it is.

To me the important question is, will the present format last long enough
to overlap the next.<<<

I agree with this. Because innovations happen so fast, the present format
will almost certainly overlap the next. In fact, DVDs are now replacing
CDs. To me the important thing (if you are concerned about longevity) is to
buy the best quality you can. It seems to me that with most manufactured
items, you can buy a better quality product (better materials and/or
workmanship), or a worse one for less money. Unfortunately, since most
people only buy based on price or popularity, you sometimes have to seek
out the best product.

I suppose this is good thing. If people only bought automobiles based on
quality and value, there would be no US auto industry and our entire
economy would collapse.

Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

Nick
