Tech Pan can theoretically provide information at up to 15,000 dpi or so,
but it's very much the exception to the rule.  Velvia and Provia max out at
6000 dpi even under ideal conditions (perfect exposure, ideal high-contrast
subject, perfect development, tripod), and usually check in closer to 3000
dpi.  Many other films are much worse.  I find that 2700 dpi is already too
much for Portra 800 or P3200, and is probably slight overkill for Tri-X,
too, depending on how badly you want to see the "real" grain.

Additionally, if you are shooting handheld, you can capture practically
everything at 2400 dpi.
