But they CAN produce it.  Philips has had one for about three years or
more...  It's purely an expense issue.  The larger the die, the less number
of dies you can get per wafer.  The more "components" in a single die, the
lower the yield (typically)...

It's somewhat similar to the LCD notebook display issue.  Though they are
starting to make LCD displays that are somewhat competitively priced to
CRTs, it's been a long time in the making...and LCDs are quite a bit
"easier" to make than imaging sensors.
