Not any more, it seems. I'd always been told that it wasn't much
different buying stuff in the US than the UK, by the time you'd added on
VAT and Duty. However, I bought a Japanese-spec laptop[1] from the US
which wasn't available in the UK, so import duty wasn't an option. It
was a pleasant surprise when I looked up the duty on the Customs &
Excise page (see my other post) and found that computers and peripherals
are FREE when it comes to duty.

I believe the rules changed recently. I certainly wasn't charged
anything for import duty by FedEx - they sent me a VAT invoice, but I'll
just be claiming that back.
