Re: filmscanners: Repro house skirmishing (long)

Digital files supplied to clients can indeed cause big problems but no
more than supplying trannies!
Over the years Ive had quite a few discussions with my clients on "why
is this brochure so poor ?"
We've sat their face to face and looked at the beautiful 5x4 trannies
and I ve had to convince them that its not my work that's at fault even
though they can see the images on the lightbox.
We now provide most of our work on CD and convert to cmyk if the client
asks and if we have a good idea of what sort of paper its to be printed
on. We always supply a print on non glossy paper from an Epson printer
so that the client can see what he's getting as the old fashioned way of
holding a tranny up to the light is rather tricky when its hidden in a
CD.
Our local mini lab can produce prints from digital files but unless I
provide a proof from the Epson their colours rarely match what I see on
screen despite knowing that my digital files are spot on but it can be a
good method of "proofing " to supply with the CD and if you do pass over
a proof you are at least able to ask why the end product does not match
it and if they had a problem why did they not contact you straightaway
to see if you could "help"them !
I really do hate working through a third party like an AD agency as I
have no Idea how im represented to the end user, and Im absolutely sure
that Ive not got repeat business from some companies because the
intermediary has blamed me for any deficiencies in the final print.
Just think of the % handling fee from a brochure run costing several
thousands of pounds to the extra they can put on the photography charges
which may have cost less than a hundred pounds to shoot in the first
place, and ask who the Agency will dump on first ?
Im afraid its a slow path to being recognised as someone who can provide
digital files that are spot on ,always! Its down to percentages, some
you win some you lose !
It still leaves a nasty taste ,best spit it out and move on.
Commiserations,been there,done that,still sucks though.
